Summary: Collection consists of a typed, translated copy of the manuscript of the biography of Padre Antonio Jose Martinez. The original biography was written by Santiago Valdez in 1877, a decade after the death of Padre Martinez. It was translated into English about 1881 by Benjamin G. Read. This new translation was done in 1993 by Reverend Juan Romero.

Padre Antonio Jose Martinez began serving the Taos parish in 1826. He published what is believed to be the first newspaper west of the Mississippi: El Crepsculo in 1835, and was a leader in the early territorial assemblies of New Mexico. Antonio José Martínez was born in Abiquiu, N.M. in 1793. His family moved to Taos in 1804. Upon completion of his studies at the seminary in Durango, Mexico he returned to N.M., first to Tomé, then Abiquiu and finally Taos. Martínez, with others was responsible for bringing the first printing press to Santa Fe in 1834.
